Patent translation pays the highest per-word rates in the profession because the document is a legal instrument defining property rights, where one word decides whether a claim is enforceable. The entry requirement is discipline rather than a science degree. This course teaches the anatomy of a patent, the claim conventions that carry legal weight (comprising versus consisting of are not synonyms, and antecedent basis must hold), and the fidelity rule that most good translators find hardest: do not improve the source, do not resolve its ambiguity, and never fix an error silently. It covers finding official terminology through the patent family, why machine output fails specifically on claim dependencies and consistency, statutory deadlines, and the heightened confidentiality of unpublished applications.
